Penelope, a recent exhibition by Tatiana Blass, is a storied installation.

Borrowing its name from Greek myth, Penelope is a tribute to the power of love and the praxis of weaving.

Built to fill the Chapel of Morumbi in São Paulo, Blass has displayed a large pedal-loom at the altar.

Attached is a intricately woven, red carpet that extends to the courtyard,

red, to signify both power and nobility, as recounted in Greek legend.

Blass’ installation aims to connect the internal and external worlds

of belief through a web of tangled wool,

yet it is unclear whether the carpet is in the process of being woven

or unraveled (as goes the tale of Penelope).

On the opposite side of the loom, the threads run wildly,

a matrix of red yarn envelops the exterior gardens,

further confounding our perception of space and place.

Cosy nightweaving!

The installation of 9 meters,
it looked quite impressive...

I have to update my blog more often,
but since a few months I am working fulltime at my regular job,
and some things got neglected...
I have to find my way in organizing 'working at work'
and 'working at home',
but I'm getting there slowly:-)

9 METERS

Remember these?
For this event, "GO GREEN",
I made 9 metres of linen and newspaper.
My loom is going to Leuven,
were I will unroll the whole piece.
After the event, I'm cutting it into placemats.

My previous text about the placemats:
"They are made of linen that was unsuitable for weaving in the industry,
newspaper and cotton tape.
They contain only cellulose,
so after usage,
you just throw them on your compostheap
and after a while they will dissapear.

I wanted to make something to throw away,
simple and pure,
a product that does not affect nature."

After this first production,
I noticed that people were having problems with the fact
that you can use them only once.
Because they know I made them on my loom
and that it takes quite some time to weave them.
They ask me if the placemats cannot be made waterproof,
but that is not the point of this work.
You have to throw it away
and maybe think about all the other stuff,
like cheap clothes and electronics, that we use
and throw away without thinking.
In every object there is a presence of materials and labour.
And not everything dissapears like the placemats after disposal.
Just think about that...

Brown is a colour I haven't used much...
So this scarf is for changing that habit.

p.s.
One very important remark:
my scarves are soft.
I select my wool very carefully,
because I hate prickly scarves myself.
Every piece is washed before sale,
that makes them even softer.

"My work with Strude began at a local museum on a small Danish island

where women’s folk dresses were exhibited on faceless cloth dummies.

The colours were intense and the detail intricate,

but it was the mask-like hood that drew my eye.

A garment called a ‘strude’, worn by women in the past to protect

their faces against the elements and still worn at the annual fête

I returned to year after year to make the work.

Here the covered faces and tightly buttoned dresses in Strude are highly resonant.

The ‘strude’ clearly delineates what is hidden and

raises the question of what is exposed in the image.

What is said and unsaid.

Just as the codes of the dresses remain an island secret for the uninitiated,

I wanted to explore what happens when the meeting between

the gaze of the subject and the viewer is deflected and denied."

There is only one flock of merino sheep

Weather has been so good here in Belgium,
so no more winterscarves.
This one is linen and cotton.
Very light, quite long, 2 meters.

Tuominen’s object works have their points
of departure in visual ideas and thinking.
Her art links together objects, words and images
into a single rich jigsaw puzzle of ideas.
In her hands, everyday utility objects,
metal kitchen utensils, broken crockery

are miraculously transformed into something else,
but without losing their original nature.
Via small additions, the use of colourful balls of wool
and skilful crochet-work, or simply by sorting and combining,

"Fascinated by the idea of shaping a textile by the pure usage of light,
we developed 'Exposures' a photosensitive fabric based on the blueprint technique.
The 'gradient machine' is especially designed
for the production process and exposes the textile
in horizontal lines to the daylight.
These line-thickness can be adjusted.
Depending on the length of exposure, the light is captured in the material,
that is resulting in different shades of blue.
The longer exposed the darker the fabric will become,
which is not only indicated by the colour itself
but as well by the numbers representing each lines' exposure time in minutes.
After the process the textile is washed with water to be fixated.
After the first edition at the Dutch Design Week in 2009
we made new experiments. Here we tried to make different colours instead of blue.
We added pigments to the emulsion, still keeping the photosensitive reaction.
This resulted in greenish, purplish and greyish colours."

DECK TOWEL

Deck Towel makes linen beach towels.

Their towels are made in a studio in New York City,
using linens sourced from all over the world.
They are light, compact, and sturdy.
They don’t hold in sand or odors like cotton,
and are both faster-drying and more absorbent.
They can simply be machine washed and grow softer with wear.

The first collection was inspired by a 1930s photograph
of five Belgian soldiers bathing in the Meuse River,
by imagining the sort of materials and patterns
the soldiers might have used to dry off.

Sarah Sudhoff is a photographer and educator based in Texas.
Of this series, she writes:
‘At the Hour of Our Death takes as its starting point
Aries’s observation that “death’s invisibility enhances its terror”.
These large-scale color photographs capture and fully illuminate
swatches of bedding, carpet and upholstery marked with the signs
of the passing of human life.
The fabrics which are first removed by a trauma scene clean up crew,
are relocated to a warehouse before being incinerated.
It is in the warehouse that I photograph these fragments
stained with bodily fluids.
I tack each swatch to the wall and use the crew’s floodlights
to illuminate the scene. The images are my attempt to slow
the moments before and after death to a single frame,
to allow what is generally invisible to become visible,
and to engage with a process from which we have become disconnected’.

EGG SHAPED MOBILE HOME

The egg-shaped mobile home
by twenty-four year old Dai Haifei
is a response to Beijing's soaring rental prices.
Haifie, a recent architecture school graduate, has designed
and lived in this temporary unit for the last two months.
The 'egg', measuring six feet in height
sits on two wheels and is constructed
from basket woven bamboo splints.
The exterior features a patchwork of small sacks
containing seeds of grass that will grow
to eventually provide insulation.
A south facing solar panel 'provides' power
to a single lamp on the inside.
During the day, natural daylight enters
through an opening in the ceiling.
The entrance can be propped open
to facilitate natural ventilation.

It wasn't always easy, it is more complex weaving this way
and one has to be very concentrated :-)
This scarf comes as quite a surprise to me.

Furoshiki is a very unique yet quintessential Japanese
item that has been ingrained into Japanese life.
It’s second nature to most Japanese to use
a cloth like this in it’s various ways –
whereas to many foreigners this is a novel but slightly alien idea.
The beauty of the furoshiki is it’s versatility –
there are endless ways to use one, all you need is a bit of imagination.
And ofcourse: no waste of paper! :-)

Snow!
I dug up scarf 1 from 'the archives',
it's not wearable because the wool is very tickly.
But I still like it.
So I'm doing a remake in two colours,
next to each other on one loom.
(I did the same thing with scarf 53 and 54.)
This does not mean they are identical in weft,
but, like I said before, a graphic experiment!

The Spanish carpet manufacturer Nanimarquina
presents this video which describes the production
and the artisanry of their skilled workers in India.

On the basis of this premise, in 1994 several companies
that imported carpets from India, Nepal and Pakistan
founded the Care & Fair organisation.
Its principal objective: to eradicate child labour
from the carpet manufacturing industry in these areas.

Strange story, beautiful colors...

Photographs by David Maisel of the cremated remains of mental patients, stored in copper canisters on pine shelves.

“Over time . . . the canisters have begun to react chemically with the human ashes held inside them; this has thus created mold-like mineral outgrowths on the exterior surfaces of these otherwise gleaming cylinders.”

“. . . each canister holds a corpse – reduced to dust, certainly, burnt to handfuls of ash, sharing that cindered condition with much of the star-bleached universe, but still cadaverous, still human. What strange chemistries we see emerging here between man and metal. Because these were people; they had identities and family histories, long before they became nameless patients, encased in metal, catalytic.”

It is the “result of the divisibility of matter,” Joseph Amato writes in his book Dust: A History of the Small and the Invisible. The first picture shows my first loom.
It is built here in Belgium,
and has 8 shafts.
The other two were bought secondhand,
they have 4 shafts.
Working on the two big ones at the moment...

GEOMETRY OF CIRCLES

"Geometry of Circles" is a series of
unnumbered animation pieces created
for Sesame Street in 1979 with music by Philip Glass.

The shorts consist of the movement of six circles
(each with a different color of the rainbow)
that are formed by and split up into various geometric patterns.

Black and orange,
two colours I would have never matched myself.
Someone asked me to,
and now I understand why...

The scarf is very flashy,
the colour orange is much warmer than the pictures show.
The scarf is also very big,
he weighs 651 grams. :-)
And last but not least, the scarf is soft,
the black yarn is alpaca!

Again one like scarf 43.
He keeps haunting me...

JUDITH SCOTT - OUTSIDER ART

Judith Scott (1943-2005) was a powerful visual artist,
who was isolated from outside influences through
the combined impact of deafness and Down Syndrome.
Very independent and self-directed,
she was endlessly creative and never repeated a form or color scheme.
Crafting armatures of bamboo slats or other discarded materials,
she wrapped these forms with lengths of knotted cloth or yarn.

Judith was introduced to fiber art in 1987 at Creative Growth Art Center,
and produced a remarkable body of wrapped sculptures.
Roger Cardinal and John MacGregor, internationally known scholars
and experts in the field, have both designated Judith an exceptional “outsider artist”
as her sculptures reflect little cultural input and are highly individualistic,
reflecting Judith’s own unique personal vision.
Many will argue that Judith Scott should be viewed simply as an exceptional artist.
That she was also disabled, while making her story all the more remarkable,
has little bearing on her art itself.

Big and soft and explosive.
Still one of my own favourites...
My boyfriend is the model,
but the scarf is also suitable for girls. :-)
